Under the One, Big, Beautiful Bill, workers in occupations that customarily received tips can deduct up to $25,000 of qualified tips a year for 2025 through 2028. The deduction is available whether you itemize or take the standard deduction.

Not tax advice. This calculator gives educational estimates based on 2026 federal rules published by the IRS and SSA. It ignores state taxes and many credits and special situations. Check with a tax professional or the IRS before filing or paying.

How we calculate it

Deduction = the lower of your qualified tips or $25,000 per return. For self-employed workers it is also limited to the net profit of the business that earned the tips. It then drops by $100 for each $1,000 of MAGI over $150,000 ($300,000 joint). Married filing separately can't claim it, and you need a valid SSN. It reduces income tax only; tips are still subject to Social Security and Medicare tax. It is claimed on Schedule 1-A.

Worked example

Example: single, $20,000 of tips, MAGI $160,000. That is $10,000 over the threshold, so the deduction drops by 10 × $100 = $1,000, leaving $19,000.
